Did you know, according to a poll by the Gallup Organization, 85% of employees worldwide, are not engaged at work? Even as companies, year after year preach employee satisfaction as their number one priority, we’re not seeing noticeable results across the board.

That said, a few companies tower over the rest in terms of employee satisfaction and optimizing for smiles. Why is that? Is it the free lunches, napping pods or gym memberships (most companies can't afford this!)?

No. It starts with these five affordable and effective strategies you can implement immediately.

1. Care about employee well being

The State of Employee Engagement (based off a sample of 150+ countries and 1000+ organizations) found 60% of employees see their job as taking a toll on their personal life. Employee well being includes your employee's physical and mental health. Illustrating you are a company focused on minimizing stress and anxiety, and encouraging physical and social gatherings illustrates to the team you value their time, and care about them as individuals.

2. Recognize good work and empower employees

Under-appreciation is recognized as the number one reason people leave their jobs, and 63% of employees have said they do not receive enough praise.

Having a genuine awareness and providing constructive words of encouragement is one of the most affordable and fastest ways to encourage job and employee satisfaction. Consider the time you spend on the details when providing constructive criticism... do you do the same with encouragement? Perhaps share a basic feedback framework and develop a culture of positive encouragement. E.g.:

  1. Consider the best environment to share feedback (i.e. impacts on the receiver as well as others in the environment who may be impacted as well).
  2. Make clear if the feedback is about sharing your encouragement and appreciation of something, your suggestions for improvements, or key concerns.
  3. Explain clearly your thoughts, the potential impacts, and your contribution to take things forward (if applicable).

3. Keep regular communication

Regular communication allows employees keep up to date and develop a deeper understanding of other peoples' roles in the company. It engages the team, promotes two-way feedback and cultivates empathy and collaboration. Being present and available is crucial for positive, productive work relationships and it's even more useful when catch-ups are regular, short and bi-directional. Some larger companies connect employees with others from all levels in the company each week, and encourage them to catch-up for a coffee, meal or a beer, get to know each other, and learn their role in the company.

4. Be realistic with your expectations

Much of the stress employees feel is caused by unrealistic expectations set on them. Instead, help your team feel encouraged to have a balanced, healthy life with realistic outlooks and goals, and provide a safe environment for them to step up and speak up when they are overworked or are concerned they may not meet the expectations placed on them.

5. It starts at the top - and looking forwards

Company culture starts at the top. The founders, directors, executives or managers need to set the standards of behavior and lead by example. Also, companies focused solely on short-term goals and who hire for short-term opportunities can be significantly limiting themselves. By focusing on the long-term, companies are directed towards creating a set of core values and a mission employees can relate to. Then, these employees can be empowered to contribute to the development and execution of short term strategies and goals which work towards the greater mission of the company.

The Global Sate of Employee Engagement found that 57% of employees wouldn’t recommend their organization. Regularly capturing feedback, sharing these with the team, and taking action to continue improving their environment goes along way to improving your employees' lives.
